Yamal LNG is to ship its first two cargoes from the Russian Arctic port of Sabetta next month, although project developers Novatek and Total have not confirmed the destinations for the shipments.

The 16.5 million tonne a year LNG-export project is preparing to start production, having taken delivery of US$10Bn worth of equipment, weighing more than 613,000 tonnes, according to Russian news agency Tass.

Four cargoes will be shipped in December. Next year, production will ramp up, shipping up to 10 cargoes a month. It will take 17-19 hours to load the cargoes at Sabetta onto the 15 icebreaking LNG carriers that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is building for the project.

In August, Sovcomflot dispatched the first of the 15 172,000 mᶾ icebreaking LNG carriers, Christophe de Margerie, through the Northern Sea Route to South Korea and on to Australia where it loaded the commissioning cargo for Yamal LNG.

Mitsui OSK starts sea trials on its first newbuilding, Vladimir Rusanov, at the end of December. Teekay LNG is testing its first icebreaking LNG carrier Eduard Toll, due to load its first cargoes in January.
