Lifetime Achievement Award: Liquefied Gas Consultancy principal consultant Chris Clucas

The annual LNG World Shipping Ship/Shore Interface Conference in London ended its first day with a gala dinner to show appreciation to the businesses and individuals instrumental to the LNG industry.

The debut of the LNG World Shipping Awards sponsored by Smit Lamnalco recognised achievements in safety, vessel design, and terminal operations during 2018, and a Lifetime Achievement Award celebrated an individual who has made significant contributions to the sector during a distinguished career.

The inaugural lifetime achievement award went to Liquefied Gas Consultancy principal consultant Chris Clucas, who said he was humbled and surprised.

"Really, for all the industry, I think we should recognise the people who have pioneered, and I really don't feel one of them," he said. "This industry... you often come into it by chance... people like myself... and you find it so fascinating, you stay there."

As LNG World Shipping editor Mike Corkhill wrote "Mr Clucas’ deep working knowledge of gas shipping has been an invaluable asset for his employers at Kosangas and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement over the past 40 years."

"Just as important is his ability to communicate that knowledge in clear, easy-to-understand terms to his colleagues and the thousands of students attending the many training courses he has organised over the years."

"Chris has also brought his unique blend of industry knowledge and communications skills to bear on the many international conference sessions and industry association committees and working groups he has chaired over the years. Proceedings are always lively with Chris at the top table."

The LNG Carrier of the Year was also the first ice-breaking LNG Carrier, Sovcomflot's Christophe de Margerie.

Cheniere Energy took home the Terminal of the Year Award for creating the first world-scale US LNG export terminal at Sabine Pass.

The winners of the LNG Technology Award were Trelleborg Marine Systems for their ship-to-shore communications link.

The LNG Safety Award went to SIGTTO for 39 years of producing industry best-practice guidelines.

Riviera Maritime Media's editorial staff for LNG World Shipping compiled shortlists and voted for this year's winners.
