Advancements in Seawater Lubricated Propeller Shaft Bearings

The use of seawater to lubricate a vessel’s propeller shaft is by no means a new development. In the steam age, propeller shafts commonly operated in seawater-lubricated bearings made from lignum vitae, a dense wood indigenous to Latin America, which was also used extensively on sailing ships due to the wood’s density and natural oils.
